Wake Up! You’re Growing Roots

The first time I heard John Legend’s sophomore album “Evolver” I knew I would buy everyone of his records and I’m I glad I did. Legend has one of those voices that feels like buttery velvet. To me he is the class of this generation of R&B singers. His new album with the legendary hip hop band, The Roots is the real deal.

For those of you not familiar with the The Roots, they were formed in 1987 and pioneered a unique hip hop sound featuring jazz and blues elements and played instruments (rather than pre-recorded music). Today’s Album of the Day is John Legend and The Roots, “Wake Up.”

The influence of The Roots brings musical and political edge and a sense of spirituality not found Legend’s earlier work. This is an album for every R&B fan – new or old school. This is the kind of record filled with musical subtleties that begs for a quiet spot, two fingers of something smooth, strong and silky, and a good pair of headphones. Check a few sample tracks below. Buy this record and enjoy it for years.
